Admission control and routing in ATM networks using inferences from measured buffer occupancy

چکیده
We address the issue of call acceptance and routing in ATM networks. Our goal is to design an algorithm that guarantees bounds on the fraction of cells lost by a call. The method we propose for call acceptance and routing does not require models describing the trafflc. Each switch estimates the additional fraction of cells that would be lost if new calls were routed through the switch. The routing algorithm uses these estimates. The estimates are obtained by monitoring the switch operations and extrapolating to the situation where more calls are routed through the switch. The extrapolation is justified by a scaling property. To reduce the variance of the estimates, the switches calculate the cell loss that would occur with virtual buffers. A way to choose the sizes of the virtual buffers in order to minimize the variance is discussed. Thus, the switches constantly estimate their spare capacity. Simulations were performed using Markov fluid sources to test the validity of our approach.

متن کاملA Comparison of Two Buffer Occupancy Control Algorithms in ATM Networks
Current research treats the ATM paradigm as a generalization of multitude of concepts in the telecommunication area. On the other hand, fuzzy logic concepts are being applied in various engineering areas. This paper describes an application of fuzzy logic inference engine to buffer occupancy control in ATM networks. A model of statistical multiplexers of video sources for ATM networks is presen...
متن کاملM1, M2, ..., Mk/G1, G2,..., Gk/l/N Queue with Buffer Division and Push-Out Schemes for ATM Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this paper, loss probabilities and steady state probabilities of data packets for an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are investigated under the buffer division and push-out schemes. Data packets are classified in classes k which arrive in Poisson fashion to the service facility and are served with general service rate under buffer division scheme, finite buffer space N is divided in...
متن کاملAn integrated routing and admission control mechanism for real-time multicast connections in ATM networks
This letter presents: 1) a delay analysis model, which is specially for the admission control of real-time multicast connections in ATM networks; 2) a distributed multicast routing algorithm, which generates suboptimal routing trees under real-time constraints; and 3) a connection setup method that integrates multicast routing with admission control.
متن کاملBuffer Occupancy of Statistical Mdtiplexers with Periodic Interchangeable Traffic in ATM Networks
In this paper we analyze the buffer occupancy in a statistical multiplexer in ATM networks for a special t y p e of traffic, namely, periodic interchangeable (PI) traffic. Certain generalized Ballot theorem is applied to analyze the problem. Explicit formulas for the expected buffer occupancy are derived.
